Bashful, But Cute!

Walt Disney's animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) is based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm. In the story, princess Snow White escapes being murdered by the Huntsman (who was hired by the wicked stepmother, the Queen) and winds up at cottage belonging to seven dwarfs, who work in a nearby mine. The dwarfs return home to find their cottage clean and Snow White sleeping across three of their beds. The princess awakens and is welcomed into their cute home. She soon begins a new life cooking and keeping house for the dwarfs. The cutest of the dwarfs is voiced by Scotty Mattraw as Bashful, named because he is the shyest of the dwarfs, and is often embarrassed by the presence of any attention directed at him.

Sock Cuties

A sock monkey is a cute stuffed toy made from socks and fashioned to look like a monkey. These stuffed animals are a fixture of folk art and kitsch. The iconic sock monkeys made from red-heeled socks emerged around 1932, the year the Nelson Knitting Company added the trademarked red heel to its product. This red heel gave the monkeys their distinctive mouth. Nelson was awarded the patent in 1955, and began including the pattern with every pair of socks. In 1958, the craft magazine Pack-O-Fun published "How to Make Sock Toys", a guide to making different sock animals and dolls with red heeled socks. The red heel sock is still in production by Fox River Mills.

In 1973 Disneyland Records released a kids version of the Lost Horizon soundtrack, disguising the much-maligned Burt Bacharach/Hal David musical as a It's a Small World knock-off. Cute But Weird...

A b-day book I was given features the art of Alba Ballard, a 1960s Long Island housewife who thought it was cute to dress up her pet parrots in costumes and photograph them. The images are cute yet disturbing... and I can't stop looking at this book; Amelie, my pet bunny, isn't too happy about it. I wonder why??? xxxo

Love is...Cute!

Love is... is a comic panel created by Kim Grove in the late 1960s, and was later produced by Stefano Casali. The strip is syndicated worldwide by Tribune Media since 1970. Love Is... began as a series of little love notes that Kim Grove drew for her future husband, Roberto Casali. The beginning of the strip coincided closely with the 1970 film Love Story. Known primarily for its cute little naked couple, Love is...products were marketed internationally for many years on greeting cards and on all sorts of cute knick-knacks.
More current versions of the the couple have them fully clothed, erasing the charm of the original concept.
